6 Things You Should Know About Going to a Theatre Audition
- Picking the right character for you- As an actor you need to understand what you are capable of. If you are a modest person, don’t audition for a big role that requires a diva attitude. If you are an alto singer, don’t audition for a character with a soprano part. You need to understand what you can do and if you can pull it off the way the audience wants you to.
- Finding the right monologue- When you are searching online or in books for the monologue that suits you and your character the best, don’t get stressed out. You will find a monologue that you can pull off as an actor. Try to find a monologue that will show your director that you can pull off the character that you want to be. But make sure that you also pick a monologue that is open to other roles as well.
- Picking the right song- Now I would have to say that this is a very tricky process because you need to really hit every note correctly and not hold back. No pressure or anything, but you have to be dead on with every note the way you would perform that song on stage. When finding your song you HAVE to pick something in your range, don’t push yourself or else it could do some damage to your vocal cords. Most importantly, DON’T HOLD BACK. That is something you can never do because it shows the judges that you have lack of confidence to be able to pull off the character of your choice.
- Practice- Depending on how much you want this character, you have to show people that you are determined to get that role. In order to do that, you HAVE TO PRACTICE nonstop. Try to perform your audition song and monologue in front of a few people just to get the feel of performing in front of more than one person or just by yourself. You don’t want to be surprised of how many people there are in the room or you will blank.
- Dress appropriately- There are many rules for this section. Don’t wear a shirt with letters/words on it, basically don’t wear anything too distracting. A solid colored shirt and dark jeans is a good option. Don’t wear makeup. Pull your hair back in a ponytail, bun, side braid, or etc. because the audience wants to see your full face and that’s how you’ll be on stage. Don’t wear anything that shows too much skin; this shows your lack of professionalism. Dress as though you are going to a job interview (business casual), just be sure to stay comfortable. If this is a musical, you want to bring or wear a pair of tennis shoes that you can dance in without tripping and/or falling.
- Confidence- The way that you present yourself is everything. You have to go into that room and be full of confidence, obviously not too much confidence because that could show your diva side and theatre groups don’t want to deal with a diva. Be the character you want to be and don’t hold back, the whole point of an audition is to show your ability as an actor/actress. If you get shy, remember that they want someone to not be afraid of a crowd. Yes, it will be nerve racking for some, but if you have a good confidence level, and you follow the six steps, you will most likely have a successful audition.
Outside
As I sit outside on an early summer morning, I hear the birds ca-cawing and chirping.
I see sun-rays breathing on the bright green grass as the leaves on the trees slightly rock back and forth with the weak wind.
Everything is green.
As I sit here on this metal royal blue bench, I notice how clean everything is, not only the ground but the air itself, it’s just so fresh. I feel the freshness of it all. I feel clarity. I feel awake.
The strike of the sun makes it’s way towards me but the leaves on the trees block it’s way to make it to my skin. Being outside makes me feel extremely refreshed. Even the sound of being outside gives me relaxation because you know that the wildlife that surrounds you is there, living and breathing the same air.
The sun is so powerful that it makes you feel like everything around you is yellow.
It’s all light, you can’t close yourself off from the light completely. The outside world is full of truth and only truth, what you see is what you get, nothing tells lies.
The organisms outside are organic; they are beautiful and true. It makes me feel at home and young, like I can run for hours and never get tired, like I can fly through the clouds and soar forever.
Being outside makes me feel centered and reminds me that I am grounded.
