Rachel
I am from...
I am from my family.
From 2 on 1 basketball games
and baseball home run derbies.
From backyard rugby and wall ball.
From long car trips and
loud car drives with the base pumping
through my chest.
I am from happy, happy birthdays
and splashes in the swimming pool.
From hours and hours
at the piano that often brought tears.
I am from hours at school,
absorbing information
and talking to friends.
I am from Sundays at church
and watching sports games.
From family March Madness competitions
and nights spent on the couch
with White Collar buzzing on the TV.
I am from reading books with the lamp on
and nights full of Netflix.
I am from Harry Potter marathons
and many Disney movies.
I am from long hours of working in the yard
with music coming from the radio.
I am from all of these memories
that remind me of what makes me,
me.

Summer Sun
In the
Heat
Of the summer,
Big drops
Of golden
Sun
Drip from the sky.
I stand out there
Soaking in every last
Ray of the precious
Light
That my skin can absorb
Before I
Burn.
I stare
At the leaves that
Shimmer
In the
Yellow light.
Sunlight hits my
Face
And it feels like a
Big splash of
Cool water,
Dripping
Down my neck and the
Tips of my
Elbows.
I wait and
Watch until
The sun
Disappears from the
Dark sky
And I say,
“Goodnight Golden Sun,
For tomorrow you
Bring
New Light.”

6 things you should know about Basketball
1. It is physical.
The game of basketball is a contact sport. People are guarding you, blocking you, touching you. You get fouled. To be able to play the sport, you need to get used to the fact that you will get hurt.
2. You have to play defense.
Without defense, you can’t win. You have to be able to guard and play man to man. Blocking is something that not everyone can easily do, but it does come in handy. To play the game of basketball, you have to play defense.
3. You need to know how to make baskets.
To play basketball means that you shoot the ball and make it. You need to concentrate and have the correct form to make the shot every time. You need to shoot with one hand, and only use the other hand to balance the ball.
4. You can’t be afraid.
Being afraid is something that should not exist in basketball. You should not be afraid of the ball or guarding people. Accept that you will get hurt at some point. You being afraid means that basketball probably isn’t right for you.
5. People get hurt.
It is unavoidable. In basketball, you jam your fingers, you twist your ankle, you twist your wrist. Things happen. If you get hurt, it means that you are giving it you’re all. You sacrifice yourself for the team. You might be afraid of getting hurt which shows good sense, but you need to know that it can happen.
6. You have to give it your all.
To play basketball, you have to give it everything you have got. You have to play until your coach pulls you out. Neither your coach nor your teammates want to see you not trying. You need to play your best until that whistle blows calling in the subs.
